Kartesh in Naryan-Mar

The R/V Kartesh set course for Naryan-Mar, the administrative, economic and cultural center of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The town lies north of the Arctic Circle in lower reaches of river Pechora. Regurlar flight connection with Moscow makes this waypoint a convenient platform to staff the expedition group. Several new participants joined the expedition: Marine Mammal Council specialists, a WWF expert on marine biodiversity, a WWF Polar Bear Patrol project supervisor, as well as the second group of researchers from the LMSU Marine Research center.

Kartesh has also been refueled on the berth of the Nenets Oil Company, as extended operations in the area of Novaya Zemlya and Vaygach Island were ahead of the participants. These operations include Atlantic walrus range and habitat research, implementing red-listed Polar bear safeguarding and protection program, as well as sea bottom sampling and hydrologic research.
