Bear Patrol Program initiated; safety meetings conducted on Vaygach Island
One of the most important objectives for Viktor Nikiforov, the WWF Bear Patrol Project supervisor, was to examine the polar bear conservation situation and minimize conflicts between locals and arctic predators. Experts visited the polar station named after Y. Fyodorov, settlement Varnek and fishermen outposts on the western coast of the island. Expedition participants conducted safety meetings for the locals and the weather station staff; they gave a talk about polar bear hazing methods, distributed safety manuals and means to deter predators.
