R/V Kartesh picks up expedition participants from Novaya Zemlya
For ten consecutive days now brave photographers and ornithologists from the Maritime Heritage association have been held in ice captivity at Cape Sakhanin, Novaya Zemlya. Despite harsh living conditions, exhausting weather (wind speed occasionally reached 30 m/s) and polar bear hazard, the researchers managed to gather adequate amount of data, examine bird colonies, and study species composition and quantitative composition of the Arctic birds. The researches have also discovered huge reindeer mortality. Meanwhile, the photographers manage to take numerous photos of the Novaya Zemlya nature.
Eventually, on August 6, 2015, Kartesh got signaled that the bay was free of ice. The vessel seized the opportunity and picked up expedition participants from Cape Sakhanin. A passage from Novaya Zemlya to Vaygach Island lies ahead.
