Novaya Zemlya to Vaygach
This July Friday was eventful.
On the night of July 15, we wound up the Novaya Zemlya research station, thus completing the 2016 season. During the 2016 stay, the Belaya cabin was renovated; we installed an iron furnace inside it. The expeditionary group sealed the cabin by nailing up windows to prevent polar bears from entering.
Meanwhile, the LMSU Marine Research center experts conducted research in the area of bird colonies.
Later, the R/V Kartesh met the R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh, which had started its 66th expedition, in the Kara Strait by Chayachy Island. Despite rain and rolling waves, participants of both expeditions exchanged salutations and wished each other success in research work.
After that, we visited cape Rogaty in the northern part of Vaygach island and explored the shore and talked to the local dweller, Vasily.
On the night of July 16, we visited Vaygach island and got in touch with the Marine Mammal council specialists working on the island. After that Kartesh set off to Naryan-Mar.
